What are objects of vertu?
These are objects that are finely and beautifully made using precious materials. They are usually small and are admired as a work of art, although they may also be functional. This category is very strong in our sales and we have been privileged to sell some exceptional and luxurious pieces. These include a nephrite and gold Faberge photo frame which sold for £18,000 (plus premium), and a gold and amethyst table strike by Janesich which sold for £16,000 (plus premium). The high prices achieved reflect a strong worldwide market and an increasing demand for rare and unusual objects of vertu especially those designed and made by luxurious brands.
Within the area of vertu, we also sell portrait miniatures and have achieved good prices for 18th and 19th century single portrait miniatures on ivory and porcelain. One of the real highlights in the history of our auction room was handling the two stunning framed sets of 19th century Indian portrait miniatures which sold for an astonishing £16,000 (plus premium) against all expectations.
