October Round-Up

By Emma Barnett

The past four weeks have been incredibly busy at Catherine Southon. We hosted a Macmillan coffee morning, Saturday viewings, and two exciting auctions! As we come to the end of this busy month, we have taken a moment to reflect on our favourite lots and events…Macmillan Coffee Morning

On Friday 26th September, we opened the doors and welcomed everyone to our first Macmillan Coffee Morning! Coupled with our Jewellery Viewing, the cake drew in the crowds.

Everyone in the office donned their aprons to aid cancer research. From Katy’s banana bread to Steve’s Victoria sponge, Dawn’s sausage rolls and Emma’s chocolate brownies – there were too many delicious treats to choose a star baker!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to pursue the sale, accompanied by a cup of tea and a slice of cake - we raised over £250!Jewellery & Silver Sale

Our 1st October Jewellery & Silver Sale started the month off with a bang (of the gavel)! The silver section began with popular names, such as Sampson Mordan and Joseph Willmore. One of the most sought-after lots of the sale was Lot 67 – an Edward Barnard & Sons silver skyphos trophy cup, which sold for £660*.

Intricately decorated with enamelled ducks, we can see why Lot 54 flew away. This Continental box, imported by renowned silversmith Erich Kellerman, achieved £530*.

The jewellery section boasted beautiful pieces spanning several centuries of design. From Georgian to Victorian, Art Deco and modern, there was something to suit every style and collector. Dating to the mid 20thcentury, Lot 285 - a pair of Boucheron ear clips, was admired for its deep circular cut rubies and brilliant-cut diamonds.

Continental jewellery continued to pique interest with Lot 183. The stylish gold and diamond set bracelet went on to make £5,480*.

Fine & Decorative Arts Sale

We saw spirited bidding in our 15th October Fine & Decorative Arts sale, with competitive hammer prices. The sale featured standout collections, including a private collection of enamelware and Chinese jade.

One of our favourite pieces was Lot 275, a Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre bowl. In remarkable condition, it sold for £2,800*.

Glass performed well, with well-known names such as Lalique, De Vez and Kosta Boda making an appearance. However, the most spectacular piece was Lot 173, a large Daum ‘Rose Passion’ vase. The internet took over the bidding procedures, as the hammer eventually fell at £1,400.

We must also mention beloved British artist John Bratby. His work depicting a lily came with excellent provenance and sold for £1,595*.

With the nights drawing in and autumn in full swing, we have one final sale left this year – our 19th November Silver & Jewellery Sale. To celebrate, we are opening our doors on Sunday, 16th November, for a Festive Weekend Preview. We look forward to seeing lots of you there to raise a glass to the year so far.
