The Jeweller of the Silver Screen: Joseff of Hollywood
Catherine Southon Auctioneers are delighted to present an opportunity to acquire pieces from one of the most celebrated names in costume jewellery: Joseff of Hollywood. A true pioneer of his craft, Eugene Joseff was instrumental in shaping the aesthetic of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Born in Chicago in 1905, Joseff developed a highly recognisable style of jewellery that combined historical references with technical innovation. Working primarily in faux pearls, iridescent stones and base metals like gold-toned brass, Joseff's designs were not only affordable for studios during the 1930s Great Depression, but were also crafted to perform authentically under the intense lighting of film sets. He avoided rhodium plating (too reflective for cinema cameras), favouring instead a matte finish that has since developed a signature, aesthetic aged patina.
Joseff’s jewellery was never sold to film productions but was instead rented; this was a shrewd business model that allowed him to maintain ownership and build a vast and enviable archive. During World War II his workshop also contributed to the war effort, fabricating precision components for aircrafts, a testament to his technical expertise and quality of his work.
Joseff created pieces for over 1,000 films before his untimely death in 1948. Following this, his wife Joan continued the business by designing jewellery for more than 450 additional productions and introducing the designs to the retail market. She recognised the desire of everyday women to emulate the glamour of screen legends like Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, and Vivien Leigh.
A landmark 2017 auction by Julien’s showcased more than 600 items from Joseff’s private vault—pieces worn by some of the most iconic figures in cinematic history.
We are honoured to offer three fine examples of Joseff of Hollywood jewellery at our auction on Wednesday 9th July:
Joseff of Hollywood Cross Pendant Necklace and Cherub Brooch
A finely worked matt cross inset with clear faceted glass and filigree detailing, suspended from a decorative curb link chain. Accompanied by an openwork brooch depicting cherubs beneath a cluster of paste stones and a faceted tassel drop.
Joseff of Hollywood Stork Intaglio Brooch and Earrings Set
An Art Nouveau-inspired set comprising a large brooch with mythical bird motifs and a central intaglio stork, paired with matching ear pendants—both retaining their original display cards.
Joseff of Hollywood Cross with Black Stones and Matching Earrings
A dramatic cross inset with black and clear faceted glass, suspended from a decorative chain. Accompanied by a matching pair of ear pendants.
These pieces exemplify the exquisite craftsmanship and enduring glamour that have made Joseff of Hollywood a legendary name in costume jewellery. We invite collectors and connoisseurs to explore this unique opportunity to acquire works that are not only decorative but also steeped in cinematic history.
