Ancient Art & Antiquities

ON THIS PAGE

Overview

Catherine Southon Auctioneers offers specialist expertise in the valuation and sale of ancient artefacts, antiquities and archaeological objects. Our experienced team provides professional auction advice on a wide range of historic and culturally significant objects, from Ancient Egyptian artefacts and Classical Greek and Roman antiquities to Near Eastern works, and pre-Columbian sculptures.

We work closely with leading consultants and academics to provide accurate valuations, informed estimates and expert guidance on preparing objects for auction. Whether you are looking to sell a single ancient artefact, an inherited collection or a larger group of antiquities, we can advise on the appropriate route to market.

As a member of the Society of Fine Art Auctioneers (SOFAA), we uphold high professional standards and take the legal and ethical responsibilities surrounding the sale of antiquities seriously.

The Provenance of Antiquities

Provenance is particularly important when selling ancient artefacts and archaeological objects. A strong, well-documented history of ownership can help establish an object's authenticity, legal status and collecting history, while also increasing buyer confidence and potential interest at auction. We work closely with vendors, solicitors and relevant specialists to investigate and establish provenance wherever possible.

Exceptional Results

Antiquities are a specialist and often high-value area of collecting, so reaching the right audience is essential. We use our extensive network of museum, library, academic, collector and trade professionals to bring specialist objects to the attention of appropriate potential buyers.

Before an auction, relevant professionals are contacted and invited to privately view antiquities and archaeological collections, helping us generate informed interest.

Our September 2026 Collectors Auction featured a private collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts from a British-Norwegian estate. Highlights included an Egyptian funerary papyrus fragment, which sold for £22,000 (+BP), a papyrus fragment from the Book of the Dead, which achieved £6,000 (+BP), and a miniature bronze Horus sarcophagus, which realised £4,500 (+BP).
