Overview

Numismatics is a specialist, academic collecting field requiring expert knowledge. Our Coins Department offers advice across ancient, early modern and modern coinage. We assess each coin with meticulous attention to authenticity, condition, and provenance, ensuring accurate and current market valuations.

BC to AD: Anglo-Saxon and Ancient Coinage

We handle a wide range of Anglo-Saxon, Ancient Greek, Roman Republic and Roman Imperial Coins. Condition, strike quality, origin and rarity are key to their success at auction. In 2021, a very fine Celtic Corieltauvi Northeast type gold stater realised £600 (+BP). Silver coins were produced in larger quantities but still command high prices, particularly those produced during important historic events. A King Cnut silver penny achieved £300 (+BP).

The same can be said for Ancient coins – an extremely fine Greek silver Athens tetradrachm sold for £300 (+BP), while a Roman Imperial silver Tiberius and Divus Augustus tetradrachm achieved £240 (+BP).

Medieval and Early Modern Coins

The Medieval and Early Modern eras are some of Britain’s well-studied and favourite periods of history. Coins from renowned monarchs such as Henry VIII or Elizabeth I are always sought after. Recent highlights include:

  • A William the Conqueror Winchester mint penny - £650 (+BP),
  • An Edward III gold quarter-noble of one shilling and eight pence - £850 (+BP)
  • A James I gold laurel, third coinage - £2,000 (+BP)
  • Oliver Cromwell silver halfcrown - £1,200 (+BP)

Collectable and Commemorative Coinage

We are privileged to have auctioned many important coins. Our October 2024 Single Owner Coin Collection sale realised over £350,000 (+BP) across 192 lots with a 100% sold rate. One of the most magnificent highlights was a 2019 ‘Una and the Lion’ gold proof that sold for £26,000 (+BP).

Buoyant Bullion

The rise in gold and silver prices in 2026 has driven record results for bullion coins. Sovereigns, half-sovereigns, and Krugerrands continue to attract strong bidder interest, making them a cornerstone of numismatic collections and investment-grade coin auctions.
