Peridot: August’s Distinctive Green Birthstone

Bright, fresh and unmistakably green, peridot is one of the most recognisable birthstones associated with August. A gem-quality variety of the mineral olivine, peridot is unusual in the world of gemstones for its naturally green colour, ranging from yellow-green to a deeper, more vivid grass green.

Peridot has a fascinating history stretching back thousands of years. One of its earliest known sources was the Egyptian island of Zabargad in the Red Sea, where it was mined in antiquity. Its distinctive green colour also led to historical confusion with emerald; some gemstones once thought to be emeralds have since been identified as peridot. Even more remarkably, olivine crystals have been discovered in meteorites, giving this August birthstone an extraordinary connection to both the depths of the Earth and outer space.

To illustrate this, we have seen strong results for peridot pieces here at Catherine Southon Auctioneers: An Edwardian pearl, enamel and diamond-set pendant realised £1,800 (+BP), while An Edwardian amethyst, peridot and enamel necklace achieved £1,700 (+BP). An enamel, gold seed pearl and peridot pendant and brooch also reached £1,600 (+BP).

These results demonstrate the enduring appeal of peridot-set jewellery, particularly where the gemstone is combined with desirable period design and precious materials.
