An Important Private Collection by John Skelton MBE FRBS
We are delighted to announce that our 4th March Fine & Decorative Arts sale will include an important collection of over 50 works by renowned British letter cutter and sculptor John Skelton MBE FRBS (1923-1999).
The curated collection, offered directly from the artist’s studio, provides a rare insight into Skelton’s creative process, featuring completed and unfinished artworks – from sculptures and maquettes to sketches and preliminary drawings.
John Skelton’s Life and Legacy
Born into the influential Arts and Crafts community of Ditchling, East Sussex, Skelton was immersed from an early age in a tradition that valued craftsmanship, integrity of materials and timeless design. He went on to establish a distinguished career, becoming widely recognised for his mastery of stone carving, letter cutting and ecclesiastical sculptures.
Skelton received numerous high-profile civic commissions, and his works can be found in some of Britain’s most important historic and cultural sites including St Paul’s, Winchester, Norwich and Salisbury Cathedral, Bexhill-on-Sea and Stratford-upon-Avon. In addition to these landmark commissions, his works are also represented in numerous private collections.
A Rare Opportunity for Collectors and Institutions
Collections offered from an artist’s studio are increasingly rare, particularly those that include working material and developmental pieces. This auction presents an exceptional opportunity for collectors, institutions and admirers of British sculpture and Arts and Crafts heritage to acquire works that illuminate John Skelton’s artistic methodology and enduring legacy.
Further highlights and individual lots from the collection will be announced ahead of the sale.
